The Best Way to Clean Your Nebulizer

Cleaning a Nebulizer

It is always important to keep up with cleaning your nebulizer. Make sure you clean the equipment in a smoke and dust-free environment away from open windows. Also, be sure to store it in a location off the floor and away from areas where someone may vacuum or dust. It is a good idea to have an extra nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask at all times.

Cleaning After Treatments

Following each treatment, take apart the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask. Rinse these parts with warm water. There is no need to clean the tubing that connects the nebulizer to the air compressor. When finished rinsing, shake off the excess water and place the parts on a clean, dry towel. Allow the parts to air dry thoroughly.

Cleaning After Final Treatment

After the final treatment of each day, take apart the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask. Wash these parts with warm soapy water using a mild detergent. Then set the pieces out to air dry.

Disinfecting After Cleaning

Every third day, after washing, disinfect the equipment. There are a few ways to disinfect the disposable and non-disposable nebulizer:

  • Mix a solution of one-part white vinegar to three-parts water in a clean bowl, and soak the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask in the solution for 30 minutes.
  • Soak the equipment in 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes.
  • Soak the equipment in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes.

After disinfecting, rinse the parts well with warm water and allow to air dry.

Cleaning the Compressor

To keep your compressor at its best, never put it on the floor during treatments or for storage. To clean it, first make sure it is unplugged. Then wipe it down with a damp cloth and be sure to check the filter and replace or clean it if necessary. To do this, follow the instructions that came with the compressor. Typically, if the filter starts to turn yellow, it needs replaced. Check the filter monthly. It normally needs replaced about every 6 months.
