How to Clean A Nebulizer

What’s the best way to clean and/or disinfect a used nebulizer?

Always clean the equipment in a smoke-free and dust-free location, and do it away from open windows, according to sources such as the Cleveland Clinic. Try to clean the equipment after completing house-cleaning, especially after vacuuming and dusting.

After each treatment, take apart the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask. Rinse these parts with warm tap water. Important note: there is no need to clean the tubing that connects the nebulizer to the air compressor. Shake off the excess water and place the parts on a clean, dry towel. Allow the parts to air dry thoroughly.

After the final treatment of each day, remember to also take apart the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask. Wash these parts with warm soapy water using a mild detergent. Shake off the excess water and place the parts on a clean, dry towel. Allow the parts to air dry thoroughly.

Every third day, after washing the equipment, mix a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water in a clean bowl. Soak the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece or mask in the solution for 20 minutes. Rinse the parts well with warm tap water. Shake off the excess water and place the parts on a clean, dry towel. Allow the parts to air dry.
