Pediatric Ostomy Resources

The United Ostomy Associations of America has provided parents and caregivers of pediatric ostomates with a treasure trove of resources and links for them to peruse. You can find more information at www.ostomy.org
For starters, parents and caregivers can download an ostomy toolkit designed for and by pediatric patients who have had, or are having, ostomy surgery. The kit, which was created by ImproveCareNow’s Patient Advisory Council and can be found HERE, includes tips, as well as guidance on how children can adapt at school, play sports, choose clothing and talk with their friends about the subject.
The online resource also points to Oley Foundation, which strives to “enrich the lives of those living with home intravenous nutrition and tube feeding through education, advocacy and networking,” according to the website.
Parents and caregivers looking to provide a little comfort for pediatric ostomates also have resources online. Ostomy.org provides links to the “Awesome Ollie” teddy bear for ostomates, educational “Gastronaut” puppets, and even “Shadow Buddies” designed for medically challenged children.
Manufacturers also provide ostomy resources. The website summarizes some of these resources online HERE.
