What Are CGMs?

If you or someone you love is living with diabetes, you may have heard of something called a CGM, or continuous glucose monitor. These small devices are changing the way people manage their blood sugar and making life for those with diabetes a little easier.

But what exactly is a CGM? How does it work? And is it right for you?

What Is a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM)?

A continuous glucose monitor is a small medical device that tracks your glucose (sugar) levels in real time throughout the day and night. Unlike traditional fingerstick testing, which gives you a single reading, CGMs provide a constant stream of glucose data. This helps people with diabetes better understand how their blood sugar levels fluctuate, whether due to food, exercise, stress or sleep.

How Does It Work?

A CGM system typically includes the following equipment.

  • A tiny sensor inserted just under the skin (usually on the abdomen or the back of the upper arm).
  • A transmitter that sends glucose data from the sensor to a display device.
  • A receiver (or smartphone app) that shows your glucose trends in easy-to-read graphs and alerts you to highs and lows.

The sensor measures interstitial glucose levels, found in the fluid between cells, and sends the data to a receiver or smartphone app for storage.

Why Use a CGM?

CGMs help you understand your body better. They can help:

  • Reduce or eliminate the need for fingersticks.
  • Help you catch low or high blood sugar before it becomes dangerous.
  • Improve your A1C (a long-term blood sugar measurement).
  • Help you feel more confident and in control of your diabetes.

Parents often use CGMs to keep an eye on their children’s glucose levels from their phones. Many CGM users feel safer when using the system, especially overnight or during exercise.

Are CGMs Covered by Insurance?

In many cases, yes. CGMs are often covered by insurance, including Medicare, Medicaid and private plans, especially if you are insulin-dependent or have had problems with your blood sugar levels. Ask your doctor and insurance provider what is covered and how to get started.
