Troubleshooting Common Feeding Pump Errors

feeding pump

Respiratory therapist, Anthony Barone, with CHC Solutions, Inc. informs us of common feeding pump errors and how to troubleshoot them.

You should try to keep the pump set loading area clean. “Many different pump errors can occur as a result of formula or other small particles inadvertently getting in the area where the feeding bags attach to the pump. Anytime you notice anything in that area, please clean it thoroughly with a damp cloth or paper towel. This is a common issue with feeding patients,” said Anthony.

Keep the Set Loading Area and Pump Clean

Many different pump errors such as rotor errors, feed errors, flow errors, pump set dislodged errors and error codes 1 thru 99 can occur as a result of tube feeding or other dust-like particles blocking the area where the feeding bags attach to the Kangaroo Joey or Infinity Pumps.

Having a set cleaning schedule is a good idea. You also can let everyone who works with the pump know the schedule and cleaning process so that it can be done on a regular basis. This includes family, caregivers, nurses, certified nursing assistants, etc. Cleaning should also be performed as needed.

How to Clean the Feeding Pump

First, make sure to unplug the pump from the power source when cleaning. Then, use a damp cloth or sponge and a mild detergent for general cleaning. Next, thoroughly clean the pump set loading area. Finally, clean the power cord and the pump clamp, and be careful when hanging the pump from the clamp.

What Not to Do When Cleaning

There are a few things to avoid when cleaning a feeding pump:

  • Do not immerse the pump in water or other cleaning solutions.
  • Try to avoid using strong cleaning solutions or harsh ingredients because they can damage the pump and pump case.
  • Do not start cleaning the pump until it is unplugged from the power source.
  • Never plug the pump back into the wall while it is wet.

Overall, if you are experiencing pump errors, check to make sure the pump set loading area is clean and free of formula or other dust-like particles. After thoroughly cleaning, try to reload the set in the pump, prime and run the feed. If the error is not resolved, call for service.
