Urinary Problems Caused by Constipation

urinary problems and constipation

Urinary problems occur in many children and can negatively affect several aspects of life. This includes urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary accidents and pain with urination. Often times, antibiotics can resolve these problems. However, occasionally antibiotics do not work because the cause of the problem may be constipation.  Constipation occurs when a person experiences difficulty regularly emptying the bowels.

Determining the Cause of your Child’s Urinary Problem

It is important to talk with and monitor your children to find out if constipation may be the cause of their urinary troubles. For instance, they may be experiencing irregular bowel movements and you may not have noticed. Asking questions is a good way to learn what is going on with your child. For example, you may ask if they have infrequent stools, hard stools, painful stools or straining or large bowel movements.

Treating Constipation

There are a few simple things you can implement in your children’s daily lives to avoid constipation:

  • Maintain a high fiber diet by eating whole grains and fruits and vegetables.
  • Sit down after eating to allow the sphincter muscle to relax.
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

In short, urinary problems are uncomfortable and inconvenient for any child. Therefore, you will want to determine the cause of these problems and the treatment. Then, your child can feel better and go on having fun.
