National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and our team at CHC Solutions, Inc. wants to help make sure you and your family are prepared in an emergency situation. Natural disasters or emergencies such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados and snowstorms can cause you to lose access to electricity. In these instances, it is important to have a backup plan in place.

Preparing Medical Supplies for An Emergency

You can follow these emergency preparation tips:

  • Write important instructions and information down on paper (for example, a doctor’s phone number or pump instructions). This way, if you lose access to the internet or if your electronic device, such as a phone or laptop, loses its battery, you will still have necessary information.
  • Watch for warnings and advisories in your area so that you can take necessary precautions and possibly evacuate.
  • If possible, call your medical provider ahead of time to ensure you will have enough supplies.
  • Have a source of backup power or batteries available to power pumps or medical devices.

Emergency Tube Feeding

If you lose access to electricity and do not have a source of backup power, you can tube feed by gravity. For more information on this technique, click here.  Printing/writing down the directions ahead of time is helpful in case you would lose access to the internet.

More Resources

Overall, the most important thing is communication between family members and emergency contacts. Make sure you know your emergency contacts, and to better prepare you and your family in case of an emergency, have plans set in place.
