Introduction to Variety’s Stroller Program

Imagine if someone could not get up and go wherever or whenever they wanted. There would be less spontaneity; many aspects of life would require planning. Unfortunately, for many families of children with disabilities, this is reality, according to the nonprofit group Variety, The Children’s Charity. 

Wheelchairs can be very heavy, can be unsafe in large crowds, and can restrict where a child is able to go. For families that rely on a wheelchair for a love one’s mobility, it can mean missing out on events in the community, or not being with family and friends, the organization said on its website. 

An adaptive stroller can fill the gap for times that families need a simpler way to get around while ensuring safety. Without it, many families can feel isolated or kids can feel like they are being left out or left behind. 

The My Stroller program – launched in 2014 by Variety in the Greater Pittsburgh area – is designed for children and youth who have a documented disability. If a child with a disability lives in Variety’s 65-county service area, are 3 through 21 years of age, and meet income guidelines, they may be deemed eligible for a new adaptive stroller, free of cost.
