Information on Receiving an Endowment for SCI Rehabilitation

More than 10,000 people acquire a spinal cord injury (SCI) each year in North America. The group Spinal Cord Opportunities for Rehabilitation Endowment (SCORE) offers special grants for those who are trying to offset the cost of recuperating from an SCI.

The organization focuses its grants exclusively on individuals who:

  1. Sustained a spinal cord injury;
  1. Were paralyzed while participating in sports or athletic recreation;
  1. Have a demonstrated financial need.

Patients can fill out the application online at https://scorefund.org/applying-for-a-grant/. A team of volunteers will review the application based on the three criteria, and then contact the applicant and their references.  Once a grant has been approved, the volunteers and the grantee will collaborate in identifying the best use of funds to improve quality of life, and payment for the identified items/services will be sent directly to the vendor by SCORE.

Grants are typically only available to residents of the U.S. and Canada. The grants generally range from $1,000 to $7,500. Past grants have been used to acquire sport chairs for tennis, rugby, basketball, hand-cycles, bathroom renovations, a permanent ramp into a home, adaptive fitness equipment, physical therapy and hand-controls.
